Happy 4th!!

Today is the 4th of July, the day we celebrate our independence from the BritishBeing an American citizen truly is something to be proud of and I am fortunate to be able to celebrate this day with my children living in the home of the free and the brave.

What better way to commemorate this holiday than to adorn the door to our home with a wreath representative of our stars and stripes??

I created it using the Stampin' Up! June My Paper Pumpkin kitThe kit came with supplies to make 24 pinwheels, red and white straws, and tags.  Perhaps if you're hosting a party this is great, but I chose to make this wreath instead.  My spring wreath had seen better days and I figured my door needs to look pretty too (insert happy face)!  I bought a styrofoam wreath and found some awesome denim ribbon at Hobby Lobby, had some leftover glimmer paper, and used the new star punch from the itty bitty accents punch set.  I got my hot glue gun out and started putting everything together.  Once I was done,  I hung it on the door using some red ribbon (retired - sorry, I would have used our cherry cobbler grosgrain ribbon, but I didn't have any).

I love the versatility of the My Paper Pumpkin kits.  You can get subscriptions for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months and the best part - you can cancel at any time.  I hope this inspires you to get crafty!

I hope you and your family have a great 4th of July holiday, whether it's crafting or BBQing, be safe and have fun!!

So happy for you!

So who am I kidding!?!?!  I couldn't wait until tomorrow to post.  In my last post I told you how happy I am now that I have a designated craft space at home and how this is soooo much better than where I was a couple of weeks ago.  (I will not punish you by showing the picture again, I promise.)

I already broke out my little crafty nook and have been creating.  I had reasons to break out my stuff.  One of the ladies at work retired and I made her a card using one of my favorite new stamps.  You've seen it all over Pinterest paired with the new blendabilities markers (that you will be able to order starting tomorrow, July 1st)!!  These markers are awesome, but I did not want to use them for this card.

And one of my all-time favorite young ladies had a birthday last week.

Here is the Blended Bloom and Bravo stamp sets on whisper white cardstock in Strawberry Slush and gold ink...  The colors reminded me of my co-worker, Rosalie...

I kept the color combo going on the tag for her gift bag.  I added some ribbon and gold sequin trim.  You know me and my bling!

Here is the card I made for Tali, my favorite 12 year-old in the world.  She's a bright, colorful, creative kiddo and I knew exactly what I wanted to make for her.  I used the Sassy Salutations stamp set, I figured it was perfect for this card!

I used the new Stampin' Up! Hearts & Stars decorative mask along with the new in-color sequins threaded through our linen thread to give the card some "bling."  I hope she loves her card as much as I loved creating it!

That's all for today (promise), but I have more to share with you in the days ahead.  I've been playing with the hamburger die and I've been having a blast!!  If you'd like to order any of the products listed below, don't forget to add me as your demo!

Until next time!

Busy little bee.. or butterfly I should say!

Hello everyone in blogland, I have been M.I.A. for the last two weeks, but I have definitely not been kicking back drinking lemonade while laying in a hammock and listening to the birdies chirping away while I read the latest Dan Brown book (can you tell what I'd rather be doing??)...

No, I have been busy trying to get back to the promise I made to myself to make something pretty at least once a month.  But like I said in my last post, I could NOT even think of creating anything every time I looked at my pile of beautiful papercrafting supplies.  Just so you know what I'm talking about, here's a picture of what I looked at every time a design popped into my head.  (I'm so embarrassed to show this, but it must be done...)

This is in our office...

And the closet in our office...

About 3 months ago, on one of my online "treasure hunts," I found an awesome, gently used Ikea Expedit bookshelf.  I knew it would be perfect for my supplies.  I had been looking at and pinning some beautiful crafting spaces on Pinterest and it was exactly what I was hoping for (I even did a little dance when I found it)..

I initially wanted to have it fit into our tiny office, but there was no way it would've fit..  Then my husband suggested the garage (banished to the garage where my daughter's easel, paints, and markers live.  You know, the messy stuff!) and I was ok with it.  Then summer came... with the heat!!  There was no way I'd be able to even think of putting anything in the garage and actually wanting to play.  Unless I did it in the middle of the night, ummmm NO..  Then my husband suggested I wait until we got a bigger house...

You can imagine the look on my face immediately after hearing this...

I finally got so fed up of looking at my pile, and the lightbulb went off.  Why not set up in a corner of my kids' playroom????  Not the ideal location, considering I wasn't interested in having little hands wanting to play with mommy's toys, but that was the only option.  Either that or waiting to win the lotto so we could buy a bigger house.

(We don't play lotto...)

So finally, on a day off, and tired of waiting for my husband to have a day off available to build the massive thing for me, I DID IT!!  Three hours and a bucket of sweat later, with the help of my neighbor, I was able to pick it up off the floor and against the wall and start ORGANIZING!! My daughter was overjoyed when I asked her to help me organize (she got her daddy's organizing gene!) and this is what now greets me when the mood to create strikes...

I love my craft space!  And I already broke it in!  I'll be sharing some projects with you tomorrow...

Have a great day!

Holy busy mommy Batman!!

It's been almost two weeks since my last post and since then I've been feeling a bit ho-hum.... I don't know how to describe it, but I think it has a lot to do with my crafting supplies looking like the Tasmanian Devil came zipping through... Technically he kinda did, in the shape of my 21 month old son!!  That and I've been really busy with other things, like life..  I'm sure many of you can relate...

Anyway, I have been bugging my husband non-stop about helping me organize all of my wonderful goodies so that I can feel my mojo come back because NOTHING takes my creative mojo away faster than an unorganized pile of stuff.  Not so much because it's in a pile, but because for me to work I need to have my things where I can see them.  They need to be accessible and this my friends, is not.  (Creative mojo melting away)...  So my goal within the next week, no, next few days, is to get everything in its own little cubby.  Nice and neat and within reach.  That way I can create pretty little things and be able to share it with you on my blog...  I have absolutely been dying to play with my new supplies.  They were delivered last week and I have not been able to play (I know, a true travesty...).  I ordered some goodies from the new catalog including the new blendabilities markers, blendies from now on, sequins (you know me and my bling), paper, and ribbon.  I can't wait to bring to life what's been dancing around in my head (nothing scary, I promise).

And as if this wasn't bad enough, today SU! announced the debut of an awesome photopolymer stamp set that I can't wait to get my little chubby fingers on.  It's the new Calling All Heroes set (#138002) and I know my son will thank me for getting this set someday.  My husband might not, but definitely my son!

As if this wasn't enough, today is Tuesday and the Weekly Deals get posted to the SU! website.

Remembering Mom...

Talk about delayed reactions... It's already May 22nd and I'm JUST NOW realizing why I've been feeling a bit blue and under the weather.  This is the month that we celebrate the joys (and pains) of loving, and being, mothers.  In my case, I get two (yes, TWO) whole days of extra cuddles and recognition for having relinquished my body and heart to bringing two perfect little humans into this world.  Why two you ask?  Well, I'm a first generation Mexican-American and in Mexico, Mother's Day always falls on May 10th.  Regardless of the day of the week, on May 10th you'd better make sure you celebrate mom.  Growing up, this was always a day for my mom, as it was for my husband's, so we've continued the tradition.  The joys of multi-culturalism.

Our kids have become the most important part of our lives and have claimed the center of our universe.  Having said that, I'm now able to look back with fresh eyes at all the times that my mom would tell me after I'd been a pain in her butt, "The day you have kids, you'll know why."

Boy do I know why... why I work to give them as much as I can, why I want to be a better person, why I'd do anything for them, why I get up every morning after only 4 hours of sleep, the list of why's goes on and on.  And now more than ever, I miss my mom terribly.  Even if it is just to tell her, "YUP, you were right all along.  I'm sorry I ever doubted you or why you did things the way you did.  You are my hero..."

My mom passed away 6 years ago, very unexpectedly, and in those years, I've gotten married, we bought our first home (white picket fence and all), and had two babies.  I'm close to becoming a teacher, AND I've started this blog and stamping hobby.  She was my biggest cheerleader, and I've missed her so much.  So, you can understand why this month has been a bit bittersweet for me.  I know, I know, everyone tells me, "She's with you in spirit.." well, let me tell you, trying to hug empty air just isn't the same as burying my head into her shoulders and smelling her mami smell.  Just isn't... no matter how much someone tries to comfort me with these words, she's still not here...

So, I still get her Mother's Day cards and this year, I made this one for her with the floral frames framelits and the petite petals bundle:

My mom loved flowers and plants and gardens, so every time I'm outside, I think of her and am inspired by what I see...

This beautiful mosaic butterfly sculpture sits outside of the Office of Education in Hayward.  Since I LOVE butterflies, I HAD to take a picture of it.  I use butterflies a lot in my projects.  We exchanged gifts at work and I came up with this bookmark using the scallop tag topper punch and my beloved Papillon Potpourri stamp set:

I couldn't leave it without some bling, so I added the sequins along with the ribbon.

I'm sure my mom would have loved her card, because I love anything MY daughter makes for me, no matter what the colors... Her scribbles mean more to me than anything.  Just as I'm sure mine meant to my mom...

I hope you enjoyed today's share, as sad (maybe) as it may be, but that's me, and this blog is about the projects inspired by my life.  Creating helps me celebrate the realities of everyday life, sad, happy or otherwise.

What do you like to do to ease your creative soul?

Toodles,
~Maria
